How to Calculate Your Freelance Hourly Rate

Most freelancers either guess or copy what others charge. Both are mistakes. Your rate needs to cover your life โ€” not someone else's. The formula is:

Hourly rate = (Annual target income + overhead + taxes) divided by billable hours, multiplied by markup factor

Step 1: Decide Your Annual Target Income (After Tax)

What do you actually need to live the life you want? Be honest. Include rent or mortgage, food, transport, holidays, pension contributions, and entertainment. A common mistake is setting this too conservatively โ€” then working yourself to exhaustion just to reach it.

Step 3: Add Taxes

As a freelancer you pay income tax AND self-employment or social contributions. In the EU, budget roughly 30โ€“40% of gross incomefor taxes. In the Netherlands, ZZP'ers pay inkomstenbelasting plus possible BTW and KvK contributions. In the UK, self-employed pay income tax plus National Insurance.

Common Mistakes in Rate Calculation

The #1 mistake. Charging โ‚ฌ60/hr and pocketing โ‚ฌ60/hr are very different things. If you are in a 40% tax bracket, that โ‚ฌ60 becomes โ‚ฌ36 after tax. Build the gross number into your rate from day one.
